SOAR, which stands for SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and Recovery, assists people in navigating through the process of applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). It is based on a national model in preparing and submitting Social Security disability applications for individuals with mental illness that has seen much higher initial approval rates than other application assistance programs.

SSI and SSDI are two types of financial support for persons who are disabled and unable to work. The SOAR program prioritizes helping individuals who have a mental illness and who have experienced chronic homelessness. A Benefits Specialist can assist in helping to determine whether an individual potentially qualifies for Social Security benefits and, if so, help file paperwork, speak with Social Security representatives, relay information, and assist in gathering documents necessary to the application process.
